Plinarna Maribor performs the activity of Natural Gas Distribution System Operator in the geographical areas of the Municipality of Maribor and the municipalities of Ruše, Hoče – Slivnica, Šentilj, Selnica ob Dravi, Rače – Fram, Miklavž na Dravskem polju and Starše as a concession activity.
Plinarna Maribor builds the natural gas network on the basis of the obligations under the concession contracts, taking into account the expressed interest of citizens in connecting to the gas network and in accordance with the adopted economic plan.

The distribution system operated by Plinarna Maribor comprises 450 km of distribution pipelines and connections of various diameters and pressures. For security of supply, the distribution system is built in the form of circular loops, so that in the event of an intervention, it is not necessary to interrupt the supply to all customers in the area, which is further ensured by sectional interlocking elements.

When building the gas pipeline network, we comply with the relevant regulations, fire protection and occupational safety laws, and refer to the relevant German regulations on gas engineering and technology – DVGW – for cases not yet defined by Slovenian standards.
As the natural gas entering the distribution network through the transmission network is odourless and tasteless, for safety reasons, an odorisation device is installed at the metering control stations (MRP) to mix the odorant with the gas in the appropriate proportion to detect and sense any gas leaks. It is important to note that the odorant has no effect on the combustion of natural gas.
The transmission pipeline network usually flows gas at high pressures – from 50 to 100 bar – while the medium- and low-pressure distribution pipelines operated by Plinarna Maribor have pressures ranging from 100 mbar to 10 bar. High-pressure gas pipelines are made of steel, while medium- and low-pressure pipelines are mainly made of polyethylene pipes.

Natural gas distribution is an optional public utility service and involves the transport of natural gas through local or regional pipeline networks to supply final customers – without delivery. Plinarna Maribor performs the tasks of an optional public utility in certain geographical areas on the basis of concession contracts with local communities. This activity is regulated by the Energy Agency – the regulator of the natural gas market.
Plinarna Maribor is an active member of the Economic Interest Grouping for Natural Gas Distribution – GIZ DZP. All 13 Distribution System Operators in Slovenia are members of this association. The main purpose of the association is to promote the use of natural gas as an energy source.

Before the connection can be made, a Consent for Connection to the Distribution System must be obtained. If you will be building a gas connection as part of the construction of a building under a building permit, you will need a prior opinion on the project documentation from the Distribution System Operator. You can also request design conditions for the project documentation – the Technical Requirements of the Distribution System Operator must be taken into account when designing. The house connection is the part of the pipeline that is used to connect the distribution pipeline and the point of consumption. It starts at the connection point on the main gas pipeline and ends at the user’s connection point directly downstream of the main gas shut-off (fire) valve. In the geographical areas where Plinarna Maribor performs the economic public service of Natural Gas Distribution System Operator, the owner of the connection is the system user to whom the consent for connection to the distribution system has been issued – the owner of the building. We will build the gas connection for you after concluding the Connection Contract, which we will send to you based on an inspection and a quotation for the work confirmed by you.

The internal gas pipework is the pipework from the main fire valve to the gas appliances and the flue gas outlet. Entrust the work to contractors who are duly registered to carry out this type of work. At Plinarna Maribor we can boast that we have many years of experience in this field and that we can carry out the entire indoor gas installation, including the installation of gas appliances, with our own team of experts.

After the indoor gas installation has been completed, the Contractor will order the fumigation of the indoor gas installation from the Distribution System Operator by means of an Application for Fumigation of the Indoor Gas Installation. On the basis of this Application, we, as Distribution System Operator, will prepare a Distribution System Access Contract for you and, if you choose Plinarna Maribor as your supplier, a Natural Gas Supply Contract. Once the contracts have been signed and you have provided proof that the indoor gas piping is technically correct, we will fumigate it and you will be able to start using natural gas.
The safe and uninterrupted use of gas is ensured by maintaining the tightness of the gas installations. During use, leakage can be affected by various factors. According to the technical regulations, installations must be inspected regularly. Users are advised to inspect their own gas installations once a year, using the instructions, and in case of doubt, have them inspected and tested by an expert – the installation will be professionally inspected and, if necessary, leaks and other faults will be repaired. This will help you to reconcile your payments with your actual consumption and avoid a discrepancy in your annual gas billing.
